Most of the shades above can be ordered with no cords at all. The only question is whether you lift them by hand or with a tap.

Blackout Shades for Bedrooms, Nurseries & Media Rooms
A truly dark room takes more than dark fabric. Three things decide it: the fabric, the mount, and what happens at the edges.
- The fabric. Blackout roller shades, blackout cellular shades, and Roman shades with a blackout lining all stop light through the material itself.
- The mount. An outside mount overlaps the window frame and closes the edge gaps an inside mount leaves behind.
- The edges. On some styles, side channels close the last slivers of light down each side of the shade.
- Layering. A blackout shade under drapery is the darkest setup of all, and it softens the room besides.
- Automation. Motorized bedroom shades can close at bedtime and open with the sunrise, on their own.

Common Questions About Custom Shades
Room-darkening fabric dims a room a great deal but lets a little light glow through. Blackout fabric is opaque. Even blackout fabric leaks light at the edges, which is why the mount and, on some styles, side channels matter as much as the fabric. We show both side by side so you can decide how dark you need it.
For most bedrooms, a blackout cellular (honeycomb) shade: dark, insulating against a cold window, and available cordless or motorized. Blackout roller shades are the simplest option, and Roman shades with a blackout lining are the softest-looking. Nurseries and shift workers’ bedrooms benefit from an outside mount or side channels to close the edge gaps.
For bedrooms, cold rooms and big north-facing windows, usually yes. The honeycomb cells trap air at the glass, which slows heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, and double-cell versions insulate more. They can be cordless or motorized, and they come in light-filtering and blackout fabrics.
Roman shades fold into soft stacks of fabric and bring the warmth of drapery, which suits living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Roller shades are cleaner and more minimal, disappear into a small roll when raised, and include solar weaves that cut glare while keeping the view. Both come in blackout.

Shades that open from the top as well as the bottom. Lower the top for daylight and sky while the bottom stays closed for privacy from the street. The option is available on cellular, Roman, woven wood and other styles.
