Duette® Honeycomb Shades

Drafty windows · North rooms · Heating bills

The shade for the windows that make a room cold. Every pleat is a sealed honeycomb cell holding a layer of still air against the glass: the same principle as a storm window, and the reason a Duette changes how a north-facing room feels in January rather than just how it looks. Architella® nests a second cell inside the first for more of it. Pleats come ¾" or 1¼", fabrics run from sheer to room darkening, and LightLock™ side channels take a bedroom to genuinely black. It absorbs sound as well, which is worth knowing on a busy street.

Applause® Honeycomb Shades

Spare rooms · Whole-house budgets

The same trapped-air idea as Duette, in a double-cell build with a shorter list of fabrics and options and a lower price. Pleats come ¾" or double. If you are doing a whole house, this is usually how the budget actually stretches: Duette in the rooms you live in and the bedroom that has to be dark, Applause on the spare room, the back hall and the upstairs windows nobody sits in front of. The cold glass still gets handled everywhere.

Silhouette® Window Shadings

Living rooms · Water views · Daytime rooms

Fabric vanes floating between two sheers. Tilt them open and the view comes back. Tilt them closed and you keep your privacy with the daylight still coming through, soft and even instead of glaring. On a water view this is the line that takes the hard afternoon light off the room without taking the cove away. Vanes come 2", 3" or 4", and ClearView® sheers sharpen the view further. It is not a dark-room product on its own.

Pirouette® Window Shadings

Living rooms · A clear view · Tailored

Contoured fabric vanes on a single back sheer, rather than suspended between two. That one difference is what separates it from Silhouette: it sits flatter and more tailored against the glass, with a crisper horizontal line. Open, the view is clear. Closed, the room is private and the light is soft. One vane size, 5". Worth standing in front of both in the showroom before you choose. On paper they sound alike. In a window they do not.

Vignette® Modern Roman Shades

Dining rooms · Bedrooms · Older Maine houses

A Roman shade built the modern way, with no cord ladders running down the back of the fabric, so the folds stay clean and the shade looks finished from the street as well as from the room. Choose a 4" full fold for something softer and more traditional, or a 6" flat fold for something tailored. Fabrics run sheer to room darkening. In an older Maine house with painted trim and tall double-hungs, this is usually the shade that looks like it was always there.

Provenance® Woven Wood Shades

Camps · Farmhouses · Rooms that need texture

Real wood, reeds, grasses and bamboo, woven by hand, so the light coming through is dappled and warm instead of flat. It is the shade for a camp, a farmhouse, or any room of white walls and painted trim that needs something with a grain to it. Weaves run from airy to fully opaque. On its own an open weave insulates very little. Add the ⅛" cellular independent liner, which raises and lowers separately from the weave, and one window gives you the texture by day and a dark, warmer room at night.

Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades

Baths · Kitchens · Warm glass, slim shade

A cellular shade and a roller shade in one: a single curved 2" cell on a roller tube. You get a roller’s slim, simple profile at the window and an insulating air pocket behind it, which is the combination an ordinary roller cannot give you. The curve along the front is the visible tell. Semi-opaque or room darkening. Good in a bath or a kitchen where you want clean lines but not cold glass over the sink.

Designer Roller & Screen Shades

Water views · Glare off the bay · Offices

Flat fabric on a roller: the simplest thing you can put at a window, and the right answer for glare. Screen fabrics are a woven mesh: the tighter the weave, the more sun it stops and the less you see through it. In a west-facing room over the water you can cut the dazzle out of the afternoon and still keep the view, which no opaque shade can do. Room-darkening and blackout fabrics are available too, but not in a screen weave. You pick one job or the other, or you put Duolite® on it and get both.

Alustra® Collection

Great rooms · Walls of glass · Exclusive fabrics

Not a different mechanism, but a curated collection of fabrics and hardware offered across the lines above, with metallic threads worked into the cloth and into the brackets, end caps, headrails and bottom rails. Alustra Woven Textures® is its Roman and roller line. An Alustra Duette insulates exactly like a Duette. What you are paying for is cloth and finish. Ask to see an Alustra fabric beside the standard one in daylight. On a screen the difference does not photograph. In a room it is obvious.

How you actually operate them

Every line above comes in more than one control, and this is the part people forget to ask about until the shades are on the wall. LiteRise® has no cord at all. You push the bottom rail up and pull it down by hand. UltraGlide® uses a short retractable wand that stays the same length whether the shade is up or down. EasyRise™ is a continuous cord loop, useful on a tall or heavy shade. PowerView® is motorized, on an app, a remote or a schedule.

Two rules of thumb from doing this locally: anything above a stair, over a sink, or behind a sofa should be motorized or cordless, because you will not fight a cord twice a day for twenty years. And if there are young children or dogs in the house, go cordless everywhere. It costs less than you would think and it is the one decision nobody has ever regretted.

Two Options People Ask For Without Knowing the Name

Neither of these is a product line. They are enhancements available across several Hunter Douglas lines. Both solve a problem homeowners describe to us constantly.

Duolite®

Two fabrics in one shade: sheer by day, dark when you want it

On Designer Roller and Alustra® Woven Textures® Roller shades the two fabrics share a single roller: a light-filtering sheer in front, a room-darkening liner behind it. Lower the sheer and you keep the daylight and the view. In the photograph the back shade has been brought down halfway on every window, so you can see both fabrics at once: room-darkening across the top, light-filtering sheer glowing across the bottom. Once the sheer is all the way down, the liner comes down behind it and stops anywhere you like, from softly filtered to genuinely dark.

It is built differently on each line. Vignette® pairs a Roman front with an opaque back shade. Silhouette® puts a room-darkening roller behind its sheer vanes. On Duette® and Applause® the two fabrics are fused into a single honeycomb. One headrail either way, not a second set of shades.

Top-Down/Bottom-Up

Daylight high on the glass, privacy at eye level

One panel of fabric hung between two rails that move independently. Raise the bottom rail and it behaves like any other shade. Lower the top rail instead and the glass opens above the fabric. That is what the photograph shows: sky and treetops coming in over the top while everything at eye level stays covered.

That is the answer for a first-floor room on a sidewalk, a bathroom, or any window where you want the sky but not the audience. Move both rails and the covered band floats wherever you park it, with clear glass above it and below.

Every enhancement, and which lines take it

The two above are the ones people ask for by description. These are the rest, and the question is always the same one: can I have it on the shade I want? Not every option goes on every line, and a few of the restrictions are the kind that change which line you choose.

Hunter Douglas’s own motorization system, now in its third generation: scheduled, app-controlled, voice-controlled, and quiet enough that you notice the light changing before you notice the shade moving.

How you control it

The PowerView® App on your phone or tablet, a Pebble® Remote or Scene Controller on the wall or in your hand, or your voice through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit. PowerView® Gen 3 also works with Matter, so it fits whatever smart-home platform you already run.

Scenes and schedules

A Scene moves a whole room at once. A Schedule repeats it daily on the clock or on sunrise and sunset, which shift correctly through a Maine year. A PowerView® Gateway or Repeater carries the signal to shades at the far end of the house.

What can be motorized

Nearly the whole line: Duette®, Applause®, Silhouette®, Pirouette®, Vignette®, Provenance®, Sonnette®, Designer Roller and Screen shades, Luminette® Privacy Sheers and Skyline® Gliding Window Panels, plus specialty shapes, skylights, and the European tilt-turn windows and French doors that take TrackGlide™, as well as Duolite® and top-down/bottom-up configurations.

Power, and the windows you can’t reach

Most PowerView® shades run on a rechargeable battery wand. No electrician, no wiring, no wall damage. Hardwired and plug-in options are there when you are building or remodelling. Skylights, stairwell glass and anything above a sofa or kitchen sink are where this stops being a luxury.

If you would rather not motorize

Hunter Douglas has a lift system for every preference: LiteRise® cordless, UltraGlide®, EasyRise™ continuous cord loop, SoftTouch™ wand, SimpleLift™, PowerTilt® and Vertiglide™ for sliders. We will tell you when a cordless lift is the better answer than a motor.

It means we buy direct from Hunter Douglas, we are trained on their full product line, and the warranty runs through us. It also means you get a real person locally when something needs adjusting years later.

Hunter Douglas does not sell direct to homeowners. Every genuine Hunter Douglas shade in Maine comes through a dealer, and we have been one for years. If a website is selling “Hunter Douglas” blinds with no local showroom and no installer, look twice at what you are actually buying.

It depends on the size of each window, the line and fabric you choose, whether you want motorization, and how many windows you are doing at once, which is why we quote after measuring your actual windows rather than guessing from a price list.

Hunter Douglas spans a wide range, from an Applause honeycomb shade on a spare bedroom to an Alustra system across a wall of glass. Every quote we write is line-itemed so you can see exactly what each window costs, and the consultation and measure are free.

Duette® Honeycomb, almost every time. The pleated cells trap a layer of still air against the glass, which is exactly what an old Maine window needs.

Duette Architella® nests a second cell inside the first for more of the same. If the room is a bedroom or a nursery that also needs to be genuinely dark, add LightLock™, which seals the side channels and blocks the light gap most shades leave along the edges.

PowerView is Hunter Douglas’s own motorization system. Shades move on a schedule, from the app, from a Pebble® remote, or by voice, and you can set scenes so a whole room moves at once. It is the right answer for skylights, stairwell windows, and anything above a sofa or a kitchen sink you cannot comfortably reach.

Most PowerView shades run on rechargeable battery wands, so there is no electrician and no visible wiring, and hardwiring is available when you are building or remodeling anyway.

Photographs cannot show you how a Silhouette vane softens hard afternoon glare. Five minutes in front of the real thing usually settles the question.

Yes, and this is worth taking seriously. Hunter Douglas offers cordless and motorized lift options across the line, which remove the hazard rather than manage it.

We default to a cordless or motorized option in any room where children or pets spend time, and we will tell you plainly when a corded option is the wrong choice for your house.

Hunter Douglas publishes its own warranty, and the terms differ by product and by component: fabrics, motors and batteries are each covered differently. Rather than summarise it here and get it slightly wrong, we will show you the current Hunter Douglas warranty document for the exact products you are considering before you buy.
